Happy Feet 2 Game Review

I was recently sent Happy Feet 2, the video game to review. This is a game which is based on the animated movie which is about penguins. Not just any old penguins but penguins that dance.  The idea of the game is that it follows Mumble and Ramon, who are penguins, on their quest to collect musical notes and stray penguins. The reason they need to do this that there are obstacles in their path, including ice blocks that need to be moved and hungry eagles that need to be defeated. Each challenge requires a certain number of penguins to complete it. Some challenges require you to collect different penguins types with special abilities before they can be completed.

At regular intervals you can break into dance. Sometimes there is no reason to do this but it is fun to see the penguins stop and flip and it is a great distraction. Other times you need to dance in order to complete part of the mission.  The penguins need to work together and dance together in order to move on.  The songs can be a bit repetitive but when y0u collect enough musical notes you can change the music.

The look and feel of the game is stunning, you really do feel like you are in an icy landscape.  The only minor problem is that when you collect a lot of penguins it is sometimes hard to tell which is the one you are controlling, but it is easily remedied by moving.  The game can be played with two players or one and it is easy to switch between the two characters when required.

This is a good natured and pleasant game which will definitely allow you to while away a few hours. It is aimed at younger children but my son who is now eleven enjoyed it and we had fun playing together.

RRP £19.99

PEGI : 3

The game is available for the X-box, wii, PS3, Nintendo DS and 3DS

Myleene Klass Nails

JML recently asked me to review some Myleene Klass nails which are new nail wraps which will allow you add to add a taste of the exotic to your nails over the New Year party season.

The nail wraps come in 16 different designs which range from plain to exotic designs so you will definitely find something that will suit your taste.  In each set there are 24 nail wraps which will fit both your fingers and toes, plus there are some spare which is always useful.

I got two different designs to review, one which was an exotic rose print and the other was a plain brown gold colour.  These are different from other artificial nails because they are nail wraps not stick on nails.  They are really easy to apply, you match the sticker to your nail size, peel it off and stick it onto your nail. The wraps are very long so if you have short nails you can cut the wrap in half and save the other half for later, very economical. If you have long nails there is more than enough to cover them all.  The nail wraps come in different sizes so you can choose the right size for your nail.

A nail file is included so you can smooth them off the to the correct size.  It’s a little bit harder to get the top edge totally smooth but this is just a question of practice I think.  There is a clear strip which goes over the top to add a bit of gloss when you have finished.

I tried out the roses design and this was what the finished result looked like. It is lovely and elegant and does not take much effort, it would definitely finish your look for a party.  It is definitely something you should apply before you go out however, I am not sure how long they would last though a day of washing up, cleaning and ironing. They are ideal for an effort free party look.

I love the range of designs, you can choose from animal prints, sparkly nails, hearts, polka dots, stars and plain prints. There is something to co-ordinate with every outfit and you can have a new look every day if you wish.  I love the way you can get unique looks without having to spend a fortune to do so, the nail wraps are £5.99 for 24 wraps but currently there is also a special deal available where you can get  5 packs for £19.99. This would keep you in nails for a long time!

My New Regis Hair

Being a working mum I don’t often get the chance to go to the hairdressers. I tend to get my hair cut into an easy to maintain style and then let it grow until I get a chance to go again.  This tends to be when I start to feel like I am doing a great impression of the wild woman of Borneo or an Old English Sheepdog and am not able to see where I am going.

As the New Year is coming up I was delighted when my friend Cheryl, from the blog Mad House Family Reviews, mentioned that Regis Salons required a blogger. I jumped at the chance and Regis Salons then very kindly organised a visit for me.

I went to my local salon in Newcastle, which is situated in Fenwicks on Northumberland Street. As I was going to get my hair dyed I had to go for a patch test the day before to check I was not allergic to the dye. The only problem with this is that Fenwicks is a department store and Regis Salon is situated on third floor where the toy department is. I had my son with me so what should have been a short visit ended up taking a while. The patch test itself only took a couple of minutes, a little bit of the dye is placed behind your ear and left for 24 hours to check that you do not have a reaction. All was well in my case.

In case you are wondering this is what I looked like before I had my hair done. Its not a great photo as my son took it and he tends to move the camera about, however you get the idea. My hair was very long and out of condition.

The next day I turned up at the salon and met my stylist Lynne.  I was a bit nervous about getting my hair dyed but she was great and offered some good suggestions. On her advice I decided to have highlights put in and a semi-permanent dye on the rest of my hair.  I have never had highlights done before so I was not really sure what to expect.  The staff really put me at my ease and I felt that I was in good hands.

The process starts with the highlights being added. In order to do this sections of the hair are painted in dye and wrapped in tin foil strips to keep them separate from the rest of the hair. You then need to wait a little while for the dye to start to take effect, at which point I was offered a cup of tea, coffee or water. I choose tea and enjoyed my cup while reading a magazine. It is nice to get a bit of peace.  After about half an hour the semi-permanent dye was then added to the rest of my hair. Again this was painted on, but this time there was no need for the tin foil. The dye was a little bit cold as it went on but the whole process was simple. There was then another wait while this worked and it was time to get my hair washed and cut.  This is a me with tin foil in my hair, again not a flattering photo!

While I was waiting Lynne was very helpful and recommended products that would work really well on my hair, which would work to stop it going frizzy and flyaway. She showed me the products that were available and explained why they would be good for my hair in this weather. I think I have been using the wrong products which has not helped my hair at all.

It was then time to get my hair washed and cut, I was waiting in great suspense to see how the colour had turned out. I decided to go for a bit of a change from the wild woman of Borneo look which is not the most flattering. I had a lot taken off and went for a bob.  I usually have layers but this time it is all one length. Do you want to see how it turned out? Well this is my new look.

I am really pleased with it. I was not sure how the colour would turn out but it looks really natural and the highlights make me look younger, as well as covering up those grey hairs that are sneaking in.  The cut will be really easy to look after, I can let it dry naturally and it still looks good. I am really pleased and I can’t recommend Regis enough and will definitely go back. After all I deserve some pampering time.

You may be interested in knowing about the big Regis competition. If you fancy winning a Cannon 550D Camera and a whole year of hair services then you should pop along to Emma Willis’s Regis blog to get all the details. You can also visit the Regis Facebook page where the Locks, Rock and Load Competition is live. All you need to do is to take a picture of your new look and upload it.  It’s really easy to do and I have added my new look. You should as well, you never know you might win!

Davina For Next – Motivating A New Regime for a New Year

I am the wrong side of forty and although I still feel eighteen inside, outside things are starting to slip. Even though I am not eating any more than normal and doing the same amount of exercise, things are starting to get flabbier and I have got a little more rounded.  I know that I am going to have to start working out more in order to look the same, which is a scary prospect.  I was excited to learn that Davina McCall is working alongside Next to launch a new fitness range.

I love Davina, she always strikes me as a very positive person and the new range is  going to be a range of  ultimate workout and post workout clothing.  It will also include  a range of innovative everyday shoes featuring F.I.T technology to reduce load-bearing stress on joints and provide additional support.

When I read Davina’s description of the new range I had to smile, it brought home that she was a normal woman like me.  Davina said that she concentrated on the details that matter to her, like ensuring the workout tops do not let your boobs bobble about while you are working out. This is definitely a common problem which all women are familiar with.  Along with this extra little details like having a place for your MP3 player or adding reflective strips to the clothes so you get seen in the dark made this sound a range that was worth a look. I was not expecting it to be quite as nice as it is however.

Let’s have a quick look at some of the items that are going to be available when the range launches in January.

I love this ensemble, it looks so elegant and relaxed. It is perfect for doing a workout or relaxing afterwards. It consists of a charcoal marl sweat top £25/€33  and black loose joggers £25/€33. It typifies the range, you can wear it for getting sweaty while working out or looking elegant afterwards and the pieces also work for lounging round the house or going to the shops.

What about this blue burnout shirt £18/€24? It has a definite stylish look about it but it will hide a multitude of sins, that wobbly tum for example, and still make you look good.  It is even smart enough to wear to work in the summer, without looking like a work out top.

If you want something that gives you more of a workout look there is a range of tops that will suit.

This blue burnout top £18/€24 covers a lovely lime gradient print cropped top £25/€33 which is perfect for those who are confident about their bodies. The lime gradient print cropped top exposes the belly and has colours going up the scale from blue to lime and looks stunning. It is easily covered by the blue burnout top for a nice relaxed look.

These would look perfect teamed with a pair of Technical joggers £32/€42 which seem to have been designed perfectly for my pear shape. They are boot cut! There are a range of other styles as well so you will definitely find something to suit you.

As well as gorgeous clothes Davina has managed to design a range of gorgeous shoes, which as well as looking fabulous offer comfort along with performance and muscle activation. The city smart flats are engineered to increase calf and hamstring activation by up to 12% which has got to be good for toning your legs.  The canvas pumps carry the promise of decreased heel impact and the trainers exert 25% less pressure on the ball of the foot.

I really like these Snake effect ballerinas £32/€41

They would look perfect at work and I can wear them knowing they are actually benefiting me at the same time.If you are not keen on the snakeskin, there are a range of different designs available ranging from bright colours to floral designs.

If you are after a trainer for those keep fit sessions how about these black trainers £45/€58?

I love the candy stripes running across the black, it gives them a unique and more feminine look.  They also look really comfortable. You would never know from looking at them they had been designed to work your legs to the max!

With clothes like these I would definitely be motivated to get a moving and want to try some new keep fit activities. Maybe these clothes are what I need for the New Year to motivate me to get fitter and shift some of that forties flab that has accumulated over the last year. I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for this range at Next when it launches in the Spring. Next are going to be choosing some bloggers to try out this range and give progress reports on how they are getting on. This sounds like just the sort of motivation I need and I shall be keeping my fingers firmly crossed. I already have plans to start a new workout regime and get outside more often. Having to give regular progress reports would definitely spur me on!

Drive safer over the festive season – Guest Post

Many of us will be taking to the roads over Christmas and New Year, visiting friends and relatives all over the country.

The weather can be pretty rotten this time of year and with so many cars on the road (driven by stressed out drivers!), it’s important that we all remember to drive with due care and consideration.

Here are some simple tips for keeping you and your loved ones safer on the roads:

Distractions
Driving at this time of year is challenging enough, so avoid any unnecessary distractions. When it comes to using your mobile phone, checking your email or even eating while driving, the rule is simple: don’t do it!

If you’re running late and you need to phone someone, pull over somewhere safe to make that call. There are two very good reasons while you should never text or phone while driving:

  •  It’s far too dangerous (in fact, you’re four times more likely to crash if you use a mobile while driving
  • It’s illegal – if you’re caught you face a fine and losing your licence. Not a great start to the festive season!

Speed
Speed is one of the main causes of road accidents. The faster you drive, the less time you have to stop if something happens. Keep an eye on your speedometer to make sure it doesn’t creep above the limit.

Bad weather
This time of year is notorious for rainy and icy conditions. Make sure you adjust your driving to suit the conditions of the road. If it’s raining, foggy or the road is icy, reduce your speed accordingly.

Tiredness
Research shows that driver fatigue is the cause of up to 20% of road traffic accidents.  Driving when you’re tired reduces your reaction time, so if something unexpected happens you won’t be able to respond as quickly.

If you plan your journey well you can avoid driving when you’re tired. If you do find yourself suffering from driver fatigue, take a break as soon as you can.

Drinking
‘Tis the season to be jolly, but be careful what you drink if you’re going to be getting behind the wheel. Staying within the legal limit is, of course, a must, but even one drink affects your driving. Alcohol reduces your reaction times and makes you less cautious on the road.

It’s safest not to drink anything if you’re going to be driving – and also beware of being over the limit if you plan to drive the morning after having a drink.

Tailgating
Driving too closely to the car in front frequently causes accidents, especially in wet weather. If you are a more considerate driver, you have a better chance of staying safe.

If someone is tailgating you, move to another lane or pull off the road and let them overtake you.

Be quids in
Careful driving is the best way to make sure you and your family stay safe this festive season. Avoiding accidents and safe driving are also good ways to keep your car insurance costs down.

Insurance companies give discounts to safe drivers because they know they’re less likely to have accidents. The longer you drive without making a claim, the cheaper your insurance premium will be.

Wherever you’re driving over the festive season, have fun and keep safe!

New Covent Garden Soup launches Peoples Soup.

In January New Convent Garden Soup Co. is launching its first ever Soup of the Month, which has been created by you! In the summer 2011  they launched the Soup of the Month competition where soup fans were asked to submit their favourite soup recipe to the New Covent Garden website. The public were then asked to vote which one they thought was the nicest and then expert chefs made a shortlist.  From the shortlist a winner was picked.

The Chinese New Year theme was won by Michael Lamont, well done to him. The soup was Chicken and Creamed Corn and now it is available on the shelves to buy. How amazing is that? The recipe was inspired by a soup his Dad used to cook for him using a method the Chinese term ‘egg-drop ‘soup, beaten eggs are gently dropped into the soup while it is cooking to give it a unique taste. The soup is a mix of tasty chicken, sweetcorn and spring onion and is ideal for the cold weather. It will warm you up while imparting its unique oriental flavours to celebrate Chinese New Year.

From now on, every New Covent Garden Soup of the Month will be created by soup fans of the nation. Each month a new theme will be unveiled which will inspire people to get creative in the kitchen. Currently the theme is ‘Shape up with Soup’ which is ideal for January.  If you fancy seeing your soup recipe on the shelves then all you need to do is to submit your recipe to the New Covent Garden Website at www.newcoventgarden.com

If you want to try the Michael’s Chicken & Creamed Corn Soup it is currently available in all major supermarkets RRP £2.20

It’s 23rd December – Will you be sleeping tonight?

According to a survey carried out by Dream Beds the 23rd December is officially the night where we get the worst nights sleep of the year.  It is the night we are most likely to lie awake in bed, tossing and turning and worrying about things. Mainly we are worrying about money and missing shopping deliveries but it does not help that the week before Christmas is stressful and busy. With more mums working full time, a lot of things need to be packed in at the last minute.

51% of people are worried about money, which is not surprising given the current economic climate. This is closely followed by people worrying about presents not arriving on time, a genuine concern given how much post is being delivered at this time of year. The younger generation have more money worries, 54% of them are kept awake worried by these. The over 50′s however sleep more soundly.

Dream Beds commissioned the survey which asked 1000 people about their sleeping habits in the run up to Christmas. 45% of us stay up later, we are either partying the night away or wrapping presents. If you are  like me you will be found wrapping presents really late on Christmas Eve because your child will not go to sleep but I am sure you are more organised! The rest of us wake up early and because of this we feel tired all day.

The survey, commissioned by Dreams Beds, asked 1000 people about their sleeping habits in the run up to Christmas. It found that 45% of us tend to stay up later; either partying the night away or wrapping presents. The rest of us tend to wake up early and, as a result, feel tired for the rest of the day. This may well explain why most of us tend to nod off after Christmas lunch, its not just the big meal but its the lack of sleep.

It is a good idea to try and prepare as much as possible in advance and to share responsibilities within the family. Try to keep your bedroom a haven and do not do present wrapping in there, hard though that may be.  I would advise not leaving the wrapping to the last second as well, there is always something you run out of and it may be too late to rectify that!

If you need some tips and advice on sleep and dreams you can find some here http://sleeptalk.dreams.co.uk

More information Dream Beds can be found here: http://www.dreams.co.uk

I do hope you get a peaceful nights sleep tonight and are not kept awake worrying.

A Christmas Card From Dragons and Fairy Dust

There are only a few days to go until Christmas and I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all my readers and friends a very Happy Christmas.  I meant to get organised this year and send Christmas cards to all my friends, but as usual time got away with me and I found myself disorganised and did not get round to it. Next year I will be organised!

I hope you all have a fabulous Christmas and get to relax and spend quality time with your family and friends. Whatever you are doing be safe, enjoy yourselves and don’t forget to take some photos so you can look back in a few years time and remember the fun you had.

I want to thank you all for taking the time to read my blog and hope you all continue reading in the New Year.

A Samsung Christmas – What would you pick?

It’s been an exciting year for Samsung with lots of new technology being released. We have seen the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Nexus and the Samsung GS2 hitting the shelves. Each of them bring different features and functions. If there was a Samsung Santa which of these devices would you be asking him for?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a tablet computer which is powered by android.  Who would not want one of these so you can be connected on the go?

It is slim, light and fast and has a camera on board to take photos with or do video conferencing. Who would not want to wake up and find one of these in their Christmas stocking? You can find out more in my review here

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the latest Samsung smart phone to be released and it also runs the latest Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich which is said to be sleeker and more intuitive than ever before.  From the reviews I have read it looks like it will be a really sleek phone and definitely one to have on your wish list.

The one that is on my wish list though is the Samsung Galaxy Note. If there was a Samsung Santa I would be asking him for this phone.

I am not sure why I like the look of this one more than the Samsung Nexus but I think the fact that it comes with an S-Pen and you can scribble notes on it just gives it the edge. I carry around notebooks in my bag and this would considerably reduce the clutter. Samsung Santa, if you are reading this, please put this in my stocking!
