I woke up this morning and for once it really felt like Spring. The sun…
Ten Things I Love About Autumn
Autumn is definitely here, the mornings are colder and it is darker earlier. While it is sad to say goodbye to the Summer (I can hear you saying “What Summer?”) , Autumn has some nice things about it as well. I thought I would share the ten things I love about Autumn with you.
- The colours of the leaves. Before the leaves drop off the trees there are some gorgeous colours to be seen. Reds, oranges, browns and greens, a grouping of trees can look spectacular at this time of year.
- Rustling though piles of leaves. As the leaves drop off the trees they end up on the floor. There is something satisfying about swishing your feet though piles of leaves on the floor. If no one is looking you can even take the chance and jump into a big pile of leaves sending them everywhere.
- Conkers. I still get excited when I find a conker on the floor. There is something about peeling aside the prickly case to find a large brown conker nestling inside that gives you a sense of triumph. We used to love playing conkers as kids, thinking up ways to make them stronger in order to beat the rest. Children these days don’t seem to play any more which is sad.
- Berries. Autumn is the time for blackberries, rosehips and other brightly coloured berries. I love picking blackberries and taking them home to make something out of them. It makes you feel you have achieved something when you have a bag full.
- The smell of smoke on a crisp evening. There is something about Autumn nights, often you can smell smoke on an evening. It may be from burning leaves, a coal fire or from fireworks someone has just let off. I love the smell, it makes you think of warmth, cosiness and cups of tea with hot buttered toast. Peat smoke is especially nice but very rare.
- Being able to see the stars. The nights are getting darker earlier and often are not cloudy. When walking you can actually see the stars. I love trying to recognise constellations and showing them to my son. The moon also looks larger and closer at the moment.
- Fireworks. I love watching fireworks launch into the sky and the patterns they form.
- Being able to see the sun rise and the sun set. The sky is often ablaze with beautiful colours.
- Getting cosy inside. When it is cold outside there is nothing better than drawing the curtains, wrapping up in a quilt with a warm cup of tea and watching a good film.
- Halloween. I love Halloween and taking my son trick or treating. We carve a pumpkin every year and get out the horror films to watch by its glow. There is something fun about being scared.
Autumn, its not all bad. I’d love to know what you like about Autumn.
