From educational museums to fascinating art galleries, it is safe to say that England’s capital is spewing with fun activities to explore for residents and tourists alike. So, it is of little surprise that the statistics show that London is the most visited city in the UK. As a food lover, you may be looking for ways to explore the culture and ambience of the city through your taste buds. Filled with several food markets and renowned restaurants, London is the best place to try authentic British meals! Here is a list of classic English foods to try the next time you’re in London.

1. Fish and Chips

Could you make a list of iconic English foods and not list Fish and Chips? Short answer: no! Whenever the question of classic English foods arises, this classic dish is always first on the list. Since the 1860s, when the meal was introduced to England, it was a staple food for the working class during the World Wars and began to gain wider traction in other parts of England. White fish like cod and haddock are usually filleted and fried with a side of golden fried potato chips and a dub or drizzle of dipping sauce (usually ketchup or mayonnaise). Although you can find this meal in any pub or bistro across London, visiting a local fish and chips shop– also known as chippy– for a more authentic experience is advisable.

2. Full English Breakfast

The full English breakfast is another classic food you can’t leave London without trying. The full English breakfast may be all evidence you need to understand that the Brits don’t play with their breakfast! This hefty and hearty breakfast meal is served with potatoes, eggs, baked beans (a British favourite), mushrooms, sausages, bacon, grilled tomatoes, and toast- with a cup of coffee or tea to wash it all down. Moreover, you don’t have to look too far to get a plate! Cafes and restaurants, no matter where in London, offer this meal all day due to its popularity. For instance, if you’re in the West of London, you can explore several hotels in Shepherds Bush to enjoy a delicious English breakfast in luxury and comfort.

3. Bangers and Mash

This oddly named dish originated during the First World War. During the First World War, Britain experienced a meat shortage, leaving households to use sausages in their meals as a form of protein. However, sausage tended to make a loud “bang” when cooked. The sausage was usually eaten with a side of mashed potatoes and covered in brown gravy. Hence the name: bangers and mash!

4. Afternoon Tea

If you’re looking for a meal experience that looks into English history and culture, you must have afternoon tea. Traditionally, afternoon tea is served with cute and delicious cakes and sandwiches and is the perfect meal to while away hours in your day enjoying the company of friends or a book. The history of this meal can be traced to 1840 when Duchess Anna would nibble on cakes and sandwiches and sip tea as she usually got hungry between lunch and dinner.
