Eight ways to make your bedroom more grown up
A bedroom should be a place where you can go to relax. When you open a bedroom door you should feel as if you are walking into an oasis of calm. The bedroom should be a space where you can go to relax and drop off to sleep without worry. It is a refuge from the demands of the day. Making your bedroom feel grown-up takes a few tweaks but it is well worth the effort. Even small changes make a big difference.
These are some of the things you could try.
Decorate in soothing tones
Soft and soothing colours add a sense of restfulness to a bedroom. Blues and greens are reminders of the sea and the sky and are perfect for creating a relaxing environment. Grey or blue with cream or white also adds a sense of calm. For a more feminine feel, warm pinks also work well but try to avoid colours that really bright as this can overstimulate the mind. Adding accents of colour with cushions or curtains can help add a more contemporary feel to your bedroom. A pop of colour against a neutral backdrop can make a room feel cosier.
Your master bedroom should be a place where is a pleasure to wake up in the morning and a haven to retire to at night so choose colours that you love. Create a room that reflects your personal style and it will be a place you love to be.
Add a bedside table
Every bed needs a bedside table. Not only does it act as a focal point to anchor the bed in the room, it has a practical use. It provides a surface which can hold a lamp, books, a box of tissues or a notepad and pen. If you have enough room add a bedside table on each side of the bed.
You need to think about your needs to choose a bedside table. If you need to keep a lot of stuff nearby, try a cabinet with drawers. This keeps the room as clutter-free as possible, making it easier to clean. It also gives the mind less detail to focus on allowing it to become calm for sleep.
Choose furniture that works for you and will provide a practical use in your bedroom
Use bedside lighting to make a cosy reading corner
You should have a good mix of lighting in your bedroom, start with natural lighting and then add extra lighting for those dark winter nights. A good bedside light is a must.
Bedside lighting is useful for two reasons; it allows you to put on the light without getting out of bed and it makes it easier to read a book without disturbing your partner. There is nothing I like more than curling up with a good read at night.
A softly lit bedside lamp also makes the room feel much cosier, especially on nights when the wind is howling outside. You can also add a feature to your room with a bedside light. It will add a splash of colour or make an interesting feature.
Choose good quality bedding
Good quality bedding is a must. You deserve good quality sheets that match and feel good against your skin. Matching bedding makes a statement and will give your whole room a grown-up feel. Choose cotton with a high thread count for the ultimate in luxury
Dusk has a great selection of bedding in neutral whites and greys which add a grown-up feel to a bedroom. Start with the foundation, a good fitted sheet, a duvet and matching pillowcases. Use neutral colours and you can then add finishing touches to make the room your own.

Add some throw pillows or patterned cushions to add a pop of colour and texture. For cosy comfort try layering your quilt with blankets or a throw. These add extra warmth and can be used for snuggling. Think about the tog of your duvet as well, you may want a higher tog for winter to keep you warm.
In my bedroom, I am using the Marseille Grey linen set from Dusk which has clever detailing on the edge of the quilt and the pillowcases giving a real grown-up feel to the room. They have a high thread count which gives them a lovely soft feel.
On top of this, I put the St Ives Light Grey throw, also from Dusk. This is a chunky knit throw which is very much on-trend at the moment. It highlights the bed adding visual interest as well as being warm and cosy for the winter. When it gets cold just grab the throw and wrap yourself up in it. You will feel cosy and warm as you snuggle on the bed with your book.
Use scented candles to create a calming atmosphere
Smell is powerful, scents can easily whisk you back to different memories. Smells can also act to calm and relax the mind, the scent of lavender is said to promote peaceful sleep. Using scented candles in the bedroom will not only create a relaxing atmosphere, the flickering flames will make you feel cosier. Just make sure you place them so they will not set light to anything. Scented diffusers can also be used to add scent to a room without having to light them.
Use artwork to make your bedroom feel grown-up
Add a personal touch to your bedroom by adding artwork. This can help to provide a focal point for your eyes. Choosing the right picture can help add a sense of calm to the bedroom. Add a large piece of artwork over the headboard and a few smaller pieces to help balance the space. You could use paintings, canvas prints or framed photographs for a personal touch.
Get rid of clutter
A clutter-free bedroom will really make your bedroom feel like a grown-up space. Invest in storage solutions to keep the clutter organised. A decent chest of drawers will store clothing and other things. Organise your wardrobe with space-saving hangers, a shoe organizer and wardrobe storage solutions. This makes it easier to find things. Add some shelves to store your books and DVDs. Storage baskets can also be a pretty and practical solution to hiding clutter.
