Why Small Details Matter in Interior Design
When it comes to interior design, many of us look at the bigger picture. What the room looks like as a whole. But it is all of the finer details that make that bigger picture up. Often it is only when we take a moment to absorb all of the smaller things that we see what is really going on.
It is the small details that enhance a room and that make it truly unique and interesting.
Smaller details often don’t make much of an impact alone; it could be the handles on a drawer or even metal furniture legs—the shade that is chosen for a lightbulb or the three textures in a single cushion.
Consider the small details to me, like the accessories on an outfit, the outfit is fine without them, but it’s not truly finished.
What are some of the finer details in interior design?
Here are a couple of things that are considered to be the smaller details in interior design:
- The types of lighting
- Nailheads, piping, cushions
- Artwork and wall treatments
- Rugs and floor details
- Flooring
How do you add the right details to a room?
When you aren’t an interior designer, it can be tricky to choose the right things for the room. Often you need to think about the overall look you are trying to achieve. It might be something understated, or it could be that you want to replicate a look from a different era. All of those small details lend themselves to that, and in fact, can be the main reason that the room comes together as you had hoped.
Planning
Ensure that you have a plan for the room long before you start. Planning will enable you to make sure that you have researched the look and understand why those little details are frills are the right ones. It can also stop you from getting carried away looking at things that won’t go. Keep on track, and have a plan.
Metals
The metals that you want to use are usually to be done at the start of the project because they have a huge impact. If you have furniture with a nailhead trim, for example, and you didn’t start by using that texture and colour, it can be hard to incorporate it at a later stage. Anything with a strong character should also be in the location long before other decisions are made.
Layers
Layers are one of the most powerful tools that you have in interior design. Layer up the details in a delicate way so that they don’t become overwhelming – but instead work well together and enhance the overall look.
Less is More
Less is more until more is better. There are some design concepts, like maximalism, that mean you will be going ‘overboard’ but with purpose. For almost all other interior design looks, you are going to want to add little by little – and never be afraid to remove something instead.
And no matter what, always remember the function that the room performs and that comfort is a top priority.
