Sprout Pencil Review
If you are looking for a biodegradable pencil why not try a Sprout pencil? They grow into plants once you finish using them.
I am always looking for ways to be more sustainable and when Sprout pencil got in touch and asked if I wanted to try their pencils, I was intrigued. These clever pencils contain seeds, so when the pencil is too small to use you just plant them and they help create your garden.

The pencils come in packs of five or eight. There are several different types available.
- Happy Bee Edition – they grow into bee-friendly flowers
- Mindful Thoughts – which feature motivational quotes and grow into herbs and flowers
- Spread the Love – which has quotes to give positive vibes and grows into colourful flowers and herbs
Inside the Packet
Inside the packet are the five pencils. They are made from sustainably harvested cedar wood, graphite and clay, 100% natural materials. The pencils are biodegradable and zero-waste.
Each pencil has a saying etched onto it, these are the bee-friendly set so the sayings are all about bees. It is a great way of raising awareness of the perils facing our bee population.

The end of the pencil is where the seeds are. They are in a green coating which will dissolve in water releasing the seeds. If you are prone to chewing your pencil, be careful!
The end of the pencil near the seeds tells you what will grow when you plant the pencil. In my case I had:
- Carnation
- Chia
- Thyme
- Coriander
- Sage
This is a lovely mix and I am looking forward to planting them.

How does Sprout Pencil work?
Instructions for planting your pencil are on the back of the box. When you want to plant your pencil you just flip it over, plant it in damp soil and after two to three weeks your seeds should sprout. You will need to keep them damp.

I think it is a lovely idea and am looking forward to growing my plants. These pencils would also make a lovely unusual gift.
