7 Things To Consider When Choosing A New Bathtub
Getting a new bathtub can be very exciting. But just which tub is right for your bathroom? This post takes a look at some of the main things to consider when choosing a new tub for your home.
Size
It’s important to measure the room to determine what size tub you can get away with. You should also consider how large doorways, corridors and staircases are leading to your bathroom – if you go too big, you may end up having to knock down walls or removing windows to get it in. Standard tubs usually measure about 1700mm long, 700mm wide and 550mm high – but you can buy smaller and bigger tubs.
Shape
Tubs can be bought in a variety of shapes. Freestanding tubs can come in a square shape, round shape or slipper shape. Back-to-wall baths on the other hand can be square or round, often built in with a side board covering the side of the bath. You can also buy corner baths in a variety of shapes, including round jacuzzi-style tubs. There are also walk-in baths for those with disabilities.
Material
Most modern bathtubs are made from acrylic. Acrylic is the most affordable material and is warm to the touch. Enamelled steel bathtubs are sometimes seen as a more luxurious option. The enamel coating makes them look just like acrylic tubs, but they are more solid. While cooler to the touch, steel tubs also retain warmth longer. Of course, there are other alternative materials to consider such as copper, tin and stone too – but acrylic and enamelled steel tend to be the most popular. Think about which material pairs best with the rest of your bathroom.
Tap style
Bathtub taps come in many different fun styles. Most modern tubs no longer have separate hot and cold faucets – instead, most are mixer taps with a single spout, which is operated by either a level or separate hot and cold handles. Chrome steel is the most popular material, but you can also buy tubs with brass taps or matt black copper taps. Taps can also be built into the tub or the wall, and there are a variety of spout styles to consider including waterfall taps and cubic spouts.
Base style
Most bathtubs sit directly on the floor. However, freestanding tubs can be raised onto feet. Clawfoot styles can have a vintage luxurious look that some people love. Of course, a freestanding tub on the floor can look stunning too. You can also build in-ground tubs into the floor.
Cost
You can explore many styles of tub on a tight budget at online stores like Bathshack. Of course, a bigger budget will give you more options – especially when it comes to custom tubs and alternative materials. Acrylic regular sized tubs are your best option if you want to keep costs low.
Installation
Some tubs are easier to install than others. Lighter and smaller tubs will often be less hassle to get into your home. If you want to relocate your tub to a different area of your bathroom, consider the fact that this may require extra plumbing work – something that can often push up the price of freestanding tubs.
