Switching up Your Skincare Routine Is Important, and Here’s Why

If you’ve been taking good care of your skin for a really long time then you’ll know how important it is to switch up the products you use now and then. It’s a great little trick to know when you’ve been using your products for a while and you notice that they’re not as effective as before. But why exactly does this happen? Does our skin build some kind of immunity to the products we use, or is it because they expire and get less effective over time? Let’s find out!

Skincare products do degrade over time–eventually!

This will really depend on the product, but it’s actually completely normal for a skincare product to degrade over time. Think of it like food; if moisture, sunlight, or even just oxygen gets to it, then it starts to become less effective over time.

This is why it’s important to keep your skincare products in a cool and dark place to ensure they don’t lose their effectiveness. Some ingredients are just highly unstable and will start to perish if they’re exposed to the environment for too long. Even just opening up the cap will begin degrading the ingredients inside, so don’t make the mistake of accidentally leaving the bottle open!

Trying new products can be fun

There are lots of new skincare products on the market these days and using them can “shock” your system. This is a benefit to your skin because it means it has a chance to experience new ingredients and you get to see if they are a positive or negative for your body. You can get everything from CBD body oil to serums that have all kinds of new and interesting ingredients that are capable of everything!

But when you’re testing new products, it’s important to take it slowly. Test out the products on a patch of skin first, and make sure you give it a fair shot by using it for an extended period of time. You might not see results in the first few days or the first week, so it’s super important that you stick with it for a while! Keep using the new products and consider even recording your results to see how your skin reacts.

Your skin changes over time as well!

Our ageing skin starts to work better with some ingredients and may become resistant to other ingredients. This is just a fact of life and we can’t really control this. You might even develop an allergy to some product that you used to use for years. It really sucks, but it’s just something we have to learn to deal with over time.

But there’s also an upside to this; we can actually gradually improve our skin so that we don’t need to use certain products. You can think of it as your skin gradually acclimating to a product. Instead of thinking of it as your skincare getting less effective, you can treat it like your skin improving so that you don’t need to use as much of something!
